In orkut there is a India community which more than 280K members in it. Two months back, I was offered moderator privileges for that community. Never thought I will be offered as I left participating in that community due to many reasons. Anyway, I accepted it and soon I became the moderator of the community.
Next day, a friend of mine who was active that time in the community was shocked to see me as moderator and did lot of protests and said many things. He did that because he believed he deserved the post of a moderator. Anyway, he is also a moderator now.
First week went banning the spammers, the abusers, the fake profiles, the hate threads and all. When most of the junk was cleared, there remained few members with real profile spreading hate. It was difficult to ban them but later their mistakes helped us.
As we were about to settle down, a thread came up- 'Amarnath- The Moderator' and that became a perfect place to bash the moderators. We were criticized a lot for 3 days. Reason- Removing a member(warn) for abusing!
It went for few days but then came 3 more moderators. That cooled down things a lot. It was not easy for members to bash the new moderators. Again as the community was getting stable, a
new thread was created- 'AJAY- The moderator'. Same thing happened and for a similar reason.
Few days passed and the members started liking the way we moderate. We used to be criticized for everything wrong in the community but then members started realizing how difficult our job is. Things were going fine in the community but I have my studies. I decided to step down to concentrate more on studies and I did.
When I left, it was interesting to see people appreciating instead of abusing/criticizing. It was something different. From the day I joined, I was abused, criticized, threatened, called names and when I was leaving, I was appreciated!

That's different that the persons appreciating you found themselves motivated to appreciate that in the community..

sukalyan...i always wanted to tell u that it is not good that u left moderatorship...But i thought u may think i m interefering in ur personal choice and by the way it was a question of ur studies and career...Now also i wont comment...But the community has definitely lost a good moderator ...I think religion bashing has somewhat increased and even muslim members are also being provoked these days to start religious fighting threads there...
Suki...bache...how many of your mods are active??..when you are busy with your studies...just carry on with that...you have nothing to do with the moderation...did anyone asked you to quit...suki...i have told you so many times...fakes say so many things...do you gonna care about all of those comments?..did gagan ever cared?...do any comm owner care?...you don't need to man...and i hope you will be back..coz sane people like you needed there...but all i want is from you...eliminate fakes...don't think twice to care their opinions..you know very well about hate mongers...you know who are they...then you need not to give them a chance to blah blah..is'nt it...and they would say lot of things man...coz a leader always would get remarked by people...so never care their comments...just go ahead with your work...and you know very well..we faced a lot before because of these hate mongers...they abused us...from very before...there is no change in them...so take it easy
@Susheel- I left moderating the community to concentrate on my studies which were affected because I was utilising too much time in keeping the community clean.
And I can't control myself when it comes to internet. So, I thought its better to quit moderating as it can help me in concentrating on my studies and it is working!
No plans of returning as of now and even if I plan to return, is there any place for me?
